Bakery Boxes Guide
Custom Bakery Boxes for Cakes, Cupcakes & Pastries
A bakery box has to do something most food packaging never does: carry real weight without deforming, while a customer holds it level in one hand and opens a car door with the other. A tiered cake in a box that bows at the base is not a packaging inconvenience, it is a ruined product and a refund.
Custom bakery boxes for cakes, cupcakes, cookies, pastries and macarons, built around what the product weighs and how it has to be carried rather than around a standard carton size.
Short Runs for Seasonal and Special-Order Ranges
Bakery menus change more often than most retail ranges. A Christmas cake line, a Valentine’s cupcake box, a summer wedding season, a one-off corporate order for two hundred cookies. Each of those arguably wants its own packaging, and none of them justifies a case quantity that outlives the season.
There is no minimum order here, so a seasonal item can have its own box for the six weeks it exists. Production runs 4 to 8 business days from approved artwork, which is short enough that a seasonal line can be committed to after you have seen how the first weekend sells rather than months beforehand.
Board Grade for Weight-Bearing Cakes
This is where bakery packaging differs most from other food categories, and where the wrong specification shows up fastest. A dozen cupcakes spread their weight across the whole base. A single eight-inch tiered cake concentrates several kilograms onto a small footprint in the center of the box, and it stays there for the entire journey.
Board that is entirely adequate for the first case will bow under the second. The failure is rarely dramatic — the base flexes, the cake tilts a few degrees, and a tier slides. Specifying by product weight rather than by box dimensions is the fix, and it is worth telling us the heaviest thing the box will ever carry rather than the typical one.
Tiered and Multi-Layer Cakes
Heavier cakes want a corrugated base rather than folding carton stock, or a folding carton with a corrugated base pad inserted underneath. The base construction matters as much as the board grade: an auto-lock or snap-lock bottom locks under load, where a simple tuck-in base relies on friction and can release if the box is picked up by the wrong edge.
Height is the other variable. Tiered cakes need clearance above the topmost decoration, and a box sized to the cake rather than to the cake plus its piping will damage the thing customers are paying for. Give us the finished decorated height, not the baked height.
Cupcake and Multi-Cavity Inserts
Cupcakes are the opposite problem: light individually, but they move. A multi-cavity insert holds each cake in its own well so they cannot slide into each other, and the cavity count drives the entire dieline, because the box is really built around the insert rather than the other way round.
Standard counts of four, six and twelve cover most orders. It is worth deciding early whether you want one box size with a swappable insert or separate boxes per count, because that decision changes both your unit cost and how much stock you hold. Frosted cupcakes also need cavity depth allowing for the swirl height, which is often taller than the cake itself.
| Product | Base construction | Insert | Specify by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiered / layered cake | Corrugated base or base pad, auto-lock bottom | None, or a base board | Finished decorated height and total weight |
| Single-layer cake | Folding carton, tuck or auto-lock base | Optional base board | Diameter and decorated height |
| Cupcakes | Standard folding carton | Multi-cavity insert, 4 / 6 / 12 | Cavity count and swirl height |
| Cookies / macarons | Shallow carton | Flat tray or divider insert | Piece count and stacking depth |
| Pastries | Folding carton, often with window | None or greaseproof liner | Portion size and grease exposure |
Window Construction and the Rigidity Trade-Off
Almost every bakery box competitor sells windows as a pure benefit, and for display they largely are. A customer buying a decorated cake wants to see it, and a window removes the need to open the box at the counter, which reduces handling of a product that marks easily.
The structural cost is rarely mentioned. A die-cut window removes board from the lid, and the lid is the panel doing the work when boxes are stacked. A large window in a box that will be stacked three high for a catering delivery is a weaker lid carrying more load than a solid one would.
There are three ways to resolve it. Keep the window smaller relative to the panel. Add a clear film insert behind the cutout, which restores some rigidity as well as keeping the product clean. Or accept the window and do not stack those boxes, which is a legitimate choice for counter sales where nothing gets stacked anyway.
Worth knowing that film adds a material that has to be separated for recycling, which cuts against a kraft or eco-positioned range. If that matters to your brand, a smaller unfilmed window or a solid box with strong photography on the lid may serve you better.
Sizing by Cake Diameter and Cupcake Count
Cake boxes are sized by the diameter of the cake plus clearance, and by finished height rather than baked height. A common mistake is ordering to the cake board size, which leaves no room for the board itself to sit inside the box.
Allow clearance around the cake board so it can be lifted in and out without the decoration touching a side wall, and allow height above the tallest decoration. If a cake is going into a box with a window, remember the decoration is now visible from the side too, which changes where the clearance needs to be generous.
For cupcakes, the count drives everything. Decide your standard counts first, then the box follows. If you sell fours, sixes and twelves, three insert configurations is usually simpler and cheaper than trying to make one box serve all three with filler.
Food-Safe Board and Grease Barriers for Baked Goods
Board in direct contact with food needs to be food-safe stock, and your supplier should be able to provide documentation confirming it. That is a straightforward requirement rather than a differentiator, but it is worth asking for explicitly rather than assuming.
Grease barriers are more of a judgment call. Buttercream, ganache, laminated pastry and anything fried will migrate oil into uncoated board over hours, which stains the box and weakens the panel it soaks into. A greaseproof liner or a coated inner face solves it. Dry goods — most cookies, meringues, plain sponge — do not need it, and specifying a barrier you do not need adds cost per unit for nothing.
If a product is going to sit in its box for a day or more, as wedding and celebration cakes often do, the calculation shifts toward including a barrier even for products that would be fine over a few hours.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about ordering custom packaging.
What types of bakery boxes can I order?
We make cake boxes, cupcake boxes with inserts, pastry boxes, and window styles, so whether you’re packaging a full cake, a dozen cupcakes, or fresh pastries, there’s a style built for it.
What materials are bakery boxes made from?
Bakery boxes are made from kraft, cardstock, and corrugated board, chosen based on how much weight or protection your product needs.
Can I get a custom size for my bakery box?
Yes, boxes are built around your product’s exact dimensions instead of a stock size, so a single cupcake, a full sheet cake, or a stack of cookies all gets a proper fit.
Do bakery boxes come with a window?
Yes, window styles are available if you want your cakes or pastries visible without opening the box, which works well for cupcakes, cookies, and display cases.
What printing and finishing options are available for bakery boxes?
You can print digitally, offset, or via screen printing, then finish with matte or gloss lamination, soft touch, spot UV, foil, or embossing to match your bakery’s branding.
Is there a minimum order quantity for bakery boxes?
Nope, there’s no minimum. That makes it easier to test a new box style, stock up for a weekend market, or order just what a single event needs.
