CBD Packaging Guide
Custom CBD Packaging for Oils, Edibles & Vape Products
Test Compliance Layout on a Sample First
Getting a compliance layout wrong is expensive to fix after you’ve printed a thousand boxes — a dosage statement in the wrong spot, a warning label too small to read, or a QR code with no room for a batch-specific update can mean scrapping an entire run. Because there’s no minimum order here, you can test your label layout on a small batch first, catch any issue, and only commit to full volume once it’s right — and because the design work is done in-house rather than through a templated tool, fixing a layout mistake is a quick revision, not a scrapped production run.
Which Compliance Features Does Your Product Need?
CBD covers a wide range of product types, and they don’t all need the same packaging features. Matching the box to the actual product avoids either under-building — a real compliance risk — or over-building, where you’re paying for features you don’t need.
CBD Oils & Tinctures
These need light and UV protection above almost everything else — a clear exterior lets light degrade the extract inside over time. Rigid or opaque kraft stock with a snug bottle insert is the standard here, along with label space for dosage instructions and ingredient lists.
Edibles & Topicals
These generally need less light protection but more label space — ingredient lists, allergen info, and serving-size details take up real room on a dieline. Leave generous space for this during layout rather than squeezing it in as an afterthought. Multi-serving edibles in particular often need resealable closures, not just single-use seals, since a partially-eaten package still needs to stay child-resistant after it’s been opened once.
Vape & Tobacco Products
This is a different compliance category from CBD oil entirely — age-verification cues and larger mandatory warning-label space are the priority here, not light protection. Treat this as its own design brief rather than reusing a CBD-oil layout.
Compliance Features by Product Type
The table below makes the difference between product types concrete — useful as a quick reference before you send over your dieline requirements.
| Feature | CBD Oils/Tinctures | Edibles/Topicals | Vape/Tobacco |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light/UV protection | High priority | Low priority | Low priority |
| Label space needed | Moderate (dosage, ingredients) | High (allergens, serving size) | High (warnings, age notice) |
| Child-resistant closure | Common | Common, often resealable | Varies by state |
| Age-verification cue | Rare | Sometimes required | Standard requirement |
State-Specific Labeling Considerations
CBD and hemp-derived product regulation is set state by state, not just federally, and it changes often enough that a layout built for one state can fall short in another. A few real examples worth knowing before you finalize a dieline: some states require a scannable QR code linking directly to that batch’s lab test results (a Certificate of Analysis), which means leaving dedicated, unchanging space on the layout for a code that will differ by production batch. Some states mandate a minimum warning-text size — as small as 1/16 inch has been used as a legal minimum in at least one state — and prohibit any cartoon-style imagery that could be seen as appealing to minors. Multi-serving edible products in several states must use resealable child-resistant closures specifically, not single-use tamper seals.
Much of this information sits on the label rather than the carton — see Labels & Stickers for bottle and container labels produced alongside your boxes. None of this is a substitute for checking your own state’s specific requirements before finalizing artwork — but it’s worth building your dieline with generous, flexible label space from the start rather than a tight layout that has no room left if a requirement is stricter than expected.
Materials and Finishing That Protect Sensitive Extracts
On finishing, soft-touch matte lamination is a common choice for wellness and oil-focused CBD lines — it has a velvety feel, resists fingerprints, and reads as higher-value on the shelf. Gloss lamination makes colors and photography pop and adds a layer of scuff resistance during handling. Foil stamping (gold or silver) and spot UV coating are both effective for drawing attention to a logo or a specific detail without needing to redesign the whole box.
Tincture Bottle Sizing Guide
Tincture and dropper-bottle boxes need to fit the actual bottle precisely — too loose and the bottle shifts and can crack in transit; too tight and it won’t fit at all once you account for the cap. Standard US tincture bottle volumes and the clearance to build around them:
| Bottle Volume | Typical Capped Height | Recommended Box Clearance |
|---|---|---|
| 15ml | ~55-65mm | 3-5mm around the bottle on all sides |
| 30ml | ~65-75mm | 3-5mm around the bottle on all sides |
| 60ml | ~75-85mm | 3-5mm around the bottle on all sides |
| 120ml | ~85-100mm | 3-5mm around the bottle on all sides |
If you’re using a child-resistant push-and-turn or squeeze-and-turn cap, add another 5-10mm to the capped height — these closures sit taller than a standard dropper cap, and a box sized for a standard cap won’t close properly over one. A foam or corrugated divider insert holding the bottle centered in the box is worth adding for any tincture shipped rather than handed across a retail counter, since glass bottles are the most breakage-prone item in a typical CBD product line.
Discreet and Smell-Proof Packaging Options
For brands that want a lower-visibility exterior — whether for shipping discretion or retail display — a plain outer box with all branding on the inside or on an insert card is a simple, low-cost way to achieve that without redesigning your whole packaging system. This is also worth considering for vape and tobacco-adjacent products specifically, where a more discreet exterior can be a genuine customer preference independent of any compliance requirement.

Emboss/Deboss

- Pairs with foil for a tactile, premium hit
- Best on uncoated and matte surfaces
Lamination
A protective film over the printed surface that locks in the finish and guards against scuffs, moisture, and handling.

- Soft-touch for a velvet feel
- Extends durability on shipping and retail boxes

A high-gloss coating on select areas: logo, title, pattern; for sharp contrast against a matte background.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about ordering custom packaging.
Can CBD boxes be made child resistant or tamper evident?
Yes, we offer child resistant and tamper evident options that many CBD markets require, so your product ships safe and compliant.
Is there enough room on the box for legal and compliance labeling?
We design in clear panels for dosage, ingredients, warnings, and any required regulatory text, so nothing important gets squeezed out.
How do you protect glass bottles and droppers inside the box?
A snug paperboard insert holds the bottle and dropper firmly in place, so they do not knock together or break in transit.
Can the box protect CBD products from light?
A closed rigid or paperboard box shields light sensitive oils and tinctures from exposure, helping keep the product stable on the shelf.
What style suits premium CBD products versus everyday ranges?
Rigid boxes give premium oils and gift sets a weighty, high end feel, while a printed folding carton keeps everyday ranges clean and affordable.
