Gift Packaging Guide
Custom Gift Boxes for Retail, Corporate & Seasonal Gifting
Gift packaging is judged twice. Once by the person who buys it, who is deciding whether it looks worth giving, and again by the person who receives it, who is forming an impression of a brand they may never have bought from. Very few products are assessed by two people before anyone has used them.
Custom gift boxes in rigid, kraft, cardboard and pillow formats, for retail gifting, corporate programs and seasonal ranges, with no minimum order and wholesale pricing at volume.
Gift Packaging From One Sample to Wholesale
The gift range below can be built to your dimensions in any format on this page, as a single sample or at wholesale quantities. Gifting runs across most of what we make — it is a large part of how Jewelry Boxes, Candle Boxes, Cosmetic Boxes and Soap Boxes are actually bought, so if you know your product category those pages may be the faster route in.
Choosing a Format for Your Gift
Format is the first decision and it drives cost more than any finish does.
A rigid box is the premium tier. It holds its shape permanently, feels substantial in the hand, and is the format customers keep after the gift is used. It is also the most expensive and ships pre-assembled, which raises freight. Our Rigid Boxes page covers the constructions in detail.
A folding carton in cardboard or kraft is the practical middle. It ships flat, costs considerably less, and with the right finish still reads as considered. Kraft Boxes in particular suit natural, artisan and eco-positioned gifting where a bleached white box would feel wrong.
A pillow box suits small, flat or lightweight items — jewelry, confectionery, favors, small accessories. It ships flat and forms by hand in seconds with no glue, which is why it dominates event and wedding favors where hundreds need assembling. See Pillow Boxes for the format.
A magnetic closure box sits between rigid and folding carton in perception. The weighted click as it closes does a lot of work in signaling that something is a gift rather than a purchase.
Corporate and Client Gifting at Volume
Corporate gifting is a genuinely different brief from retail gifting, and it is the segment most packaging suppliers ignore.
The volumes are known in advance, the recipients are known, and the packaging usually has to carry a company’s brand rather than a product’s. Common programs include annual conference and event kits, client appreciation packages, employee recognition and onboarding boxes, and partner or investor gifts. Real estate is a distinct sub-segment, where agents present a completed handover pack — documents, keys, warranty paperwork, garage remotes — in a branded box at closing.
Two things matter more here than in retail gifting. First, the box usually holds several unlike items, so it is a partition and insert problem rather than a printing one. Second, corporate programs repeat annually, which makes a reusable structure with a swappable insert card cheaper across three years than reprinting the whole box each time.
Seasonal Gifting: Planning Against the Calendar
Seasonal gift packaging fails on timing far more often than on design. The box arrives after the selling window has opened, or the run is sized for a demand estimate made too early.
The useful discipline is to work backwards from the selling window rather than forwards from when you get around to it. Production here runs four to eight business days from approved artwork, and artwork approval usually takes longer than production does, so the real constraint is your own design sign-off rather than the print schedule.
Because there is no minimum order, seasonal ranges can be run in two stages rather than one. Order a first quantity sized to what you are confident of selling, see how the opening weekend performs, then reorder against real demand instead of a forecast. That is a genuinely different way to plan a seasonal range from committing to a full run in September.
Multi-Item Gift Sets and Presentation
A gift set is a structural problem before it is an aesthetic one. Several items of different shapes have to sit in fixed positions, stay separated so they do not knock together, and be revealed in a sensible order when the lid comes off.
Die-cut corrugated or paperboard partitions are the usual answer and keep the pack fully recyclable. Foam inserts make sense where something is fragile or where a snug, deliberate fit is part of the impression. For larger sets, a two-tier construction with a lift-out tray above and a second compartment below gives a genuine reveal and stops a large box feeling half empty.
The point worth planning for is that a partition layout is fixed once the die is cut. If your set contents are still changing, either settle them before tooling or design the layout with an item you may add later already accounted for.
Add-Ons That Signal a Gift
Most of what makes packaging feel like a gift happens inside the box rather than on it. Printed tissue paper wrapping the product adds a layer of anticipation before the item is reached. A branded sticker or wax-effect seal closing that tissue makes the pack feel finished rather than merely full.
A ribbon closure, either a pull-tie or a fixed bow, is the most recognisable gift cue available and costs little. An insert or message card gives a place for a handwritten or printed note, which is what most corporate programs actually need. Foil stamping, embossing and soft-touch lamination all read as premium on the box itself, and soft-touch in particular registers on a product someone picks up and turns over before deciding.
A window cutout is worth considering where the product itself is attractive, though it removes the element of surprise, which for a gift is sometimes exactly what you are selling.

Foil Stamping
Add a metallic or holographic sheen to your logo or key elements. Foil catches the light and signals premium the second a customer picks up the box.
- Gold, silver, rose gold, holographic, and more
- Works on every box style and material
- Pairs cleanly with matte lamination
- No extra setup fee on standard foils
Emboss/Deboss
Press your logo or pattern into the stock for a raised or recessed texture customers feel before they read it. No ink; the impression does the work.
- Single-level or multi-level dies
- Works on Kraft, SBS, and rigid stock
- Pairs with foil for a tactile, premium hit
- Best on uncoated and matte surfaces
Lamination
A protective film over the printed surface that locks in the finish and guards against scuffs, moisture, and handling.
- Matte for a soft, muted look
- Gloss for high shine and color pop
- Soft-touch for a velvet feel
- Extends durability on shipping and retail boxes
Spot UV
A high-gloss coating on select areas: logo, title, pattern; for sharp contrast against a matte background.
- Gloss-on-matte contrast
- Highlights logos and key artwork
- Pairs with soft-touch lamination
- Registered precisely to your dieline
Custom Inserts
Fitted inserts that hold product in place, cut movement in transit, and control the reveal on opening.
- Foam, corrugated, or paperboard
- Cut to your exact product dimensions
- Protects fragile and multi-piece items
- Builds a deliberate unboxing sequence
Custom Styles
A cut-out with clear film so customers see the product without opening the box, built for retail shelves.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about ordering custom packaging.
What are custom gift boxes typically used for?
Gift boxes are used for retail gift wrapping, corporate and client gifts, subscription box sets, and seasonal or promotional gifting. They’re built to present a product attractively rather than just protect it in transit, which is why finishing options and box structure matter more here than in standard shipping packaging.
What materials are gift boxes made from?
Gift boxes can be made from rigid chipboard, SBS board, or kraft paperboard, depending on the sturdiness and look you want. Rigid and SBS options give a firmer, more structured box, while kraft offers a natural, uncoated finish for a simpler presentation.
Can gift boxes be sized to fit a specific product?
Yes, gift boxes can be produced in any custom size, so they can be built around a specific product rather than using an oversized standard box. This is useful for gift sets, bundled items, or products that need a closer, more finished fit inside the box.
What printing and finishing options are available for gift boxes?
Gift boxes can be printed using digital, offset, or screen printing and finished with foil stamping, embossing, soft-touch coating, matte or gloss lamination, or spot UV. These finishes are commonly used on gift packaging to create more contrast and detail than standard printing alone.
Is there a minimum order quantity for custom gift boxes?
No, there’s no minimum order quantity, so gift boxes can be ordered at wholesale pricing for a single gifting run or an ongoing retail program. Wholesale orders also qualify for free shipping, which helps when ordering larger quantities for seasonal or corporate gifting.
