A Box That Ships Flat and Forms in Seconds
The construction is worth understanding, because it explains every advantage the format has.
A pillow box arrives as a flat, die-cut and creased blank. Lightly squeezing the two long edges toward each other makes the curved pillow shape appear, and the two end flaps then push inward to close it. There is no glue, no tape, no tooling and no assembly step to learn. You squeeze, load and tuck.
That produces three practical advantages competitors rarely spell out. Storage volume is a fraction of an assembled box, so a thousand blanks take a shelf rather than a pallet. Assembly labour is effectively zero, which matters when you are packing hundreds of units by hand for an event. And because it ships flat, inbound freight costs less than for any pre-assembled format.
The corresponding limitation is structural. A pillow box is a folded blank held by tension rather than a sealed box, so it protects against dust, handling and light knocks, not against crushing. That shapes where it fits, which is the next section.
When a Pillow Box Beats a Standard Carton
Choose a pillow box when the product is small, flat or light, when presentation matters more than protection, and when you are assembling by hand in quantity. Jewelry, soap bars, confectionery, cosmetics samples, small accessories, event and wedding favors, and retail impulse items all sit comfortably in that description.
Choose a folding carton or a rigid box instead when the product has real weight, when it needs to be stacked, or when it will ship on its own through a courier network. A pillow box posted unprotected is likely to arrive flattened. If you are shipping direct to customers, the usual approach is a pillow box for presentation inside a mailer or shipping box for protection.
The other thing a pillow box does unusually well is shelf presence. Almost everything else on a retail shelf is rectangular, so a curved silhouette breaks the pattern and draws the eye before the customer has read anything on it. That is a genuine merchandising argument, not just an aesthetic one.
Sizing for Small and Flat Products
Pillow boxes are dimensioned by the flat blank’s width and length plus the depth the curve creates when it is formed, so the internal space is not a simple rectangle. The curve gives you more room in the center than at the ends, which suits products that are thicker in the middle — a soap bar, a rolled item, a bracelet — and suits rigid, square-cornered products less well.
Standard sizes cover most small products, and suppliers in this category commonly stock twenty or more. Custom dimensions are worth ordering when the product sits awkwardly in the nearest standard size, because a pillow box that is too large lets the contents slide toward one end and lose the shape the format is chosen for.
Send us the product dimensions, including its thickest point, rather than a box size. The thickest point determines whether the formed curve will actually accommodate it.
Window and Handle Variants
A die-cut window is the most common variant, usually with a clear film backing. On a pillow box it works particularly well because the curve naturally presents the product toward the viewer rather than lying it flat. For soaps and candles it also lets some scent through, which is a real selling advantage at a market stall or counter.
A punched handle turns the box into a carry pack, which suits favors handed out at events and small retail purchases taken away without a bag. As with any hang or carry feature, the board above the punch has to carry the loaded weight, so tell us the packed weight rather than assuming a standard punch will hold.
Both variants remove board from the blank, which reduces the tension holding the formed shape. On larger pillow boxes with a big window, a slightly heavier caliper is worth specifying to compensate.
Board and Finish Options
Coated paperboard is the standard, commonly around 12pt for small boxes, with heavier calipers where the box is larger or carries a window. SBS gives the brightest surface and the most accurate color reproduction, which matters because the curved face catches light differently across its width and flat color can look uneven on a poor stock.
Kraft is widely used for artisan and natural positioning, with the same caveat as on any kraft printing — the brown base shifts every color, so design for it rather than adapting onto it. Corrugated is available for larger or heavier pillow boxes where the standard board would not hold the form.
On finishes, matte, gloss and semi-gloss laminates all add durability as well as appearance, which is worth having on a format handled repeatedly at a counter. Spot UV, foil stamping and embossing all work, though on a curved face it is worth keeping foil and embossed elements away from the tightest part of the curve where the surface deforms most.

Why is a pillow box shaped like that, and does it actually stay closed?
The two ends are die cut as opposing crescents, so when you press them in they cross over each other and lock. There is no tape, no glue, and no separate lid, which is why the shape survived as a favor and gift format.
How do I measure for pillow packaging?
Give us length, width, and the thickness of what goes inside. Thickness is the number that decides everything, because the arc has to close over your product without forcing the crescent ends back open.
What can I actually fit in one?
Flat or slim items do best. Scarves, socks, jewelry, hair ties, lip products, cookies, bath salts, gift cards, and small electronics accessories all sit well inside the curve. Anything rigid and boxy will fight the arc and leave the ends gaping.
Can I mail a pillow box on its own?
We do not recommend it. Sorting belts and stacking pressure push on the crescent ends, and once one end pops the whole box opens. Put it inside a mailer or shipper for transit and let the pillow box do the presentation job at the other end.
Can I get a hang hole for peg displays?
Yes. A euro slot or round hang hole is die cut into the top panel, above the score line rather than through it, so hanging weight pulls on flat board instead of the curve. CONFIRM: hang hole placement should sit at least 10mm above the curve score, please confirm against your die library.
What stock works best for the curved ends?
Kraft and white SBS in a mid caliper both curve cleanly. Go heavier and the board fractures at the crescent instead of bending, go lighter and the ends lose their spring and sag open. CONFIRM: house range is roughly 14pt to 18pt, please confirm.
Can pillow boxes have a window?
Yes, as a die cut opening rather than a filmed one. We do not use plastic or poly film patching anywhere in our range, so the window on a pillow box is an open cut, which also means the opening needs to sit on the flat face and stay clear of the score lines.
Will foil stamping and embossing survive the curve?
On the flat front and back panels, yes. Placed across the crescent score, foil and embossing crack when the ends are folded in, so we keep raised and metallic detail on the flat faces and let the curve stay clean.
Do they arrive assembled?
They ship flat and die cut. You fold along the scores and press both crescents in, which takes a couple of seconds per box and means no assembly line and no shipping air.
